ROEIVs (Remote Operated Emergency Isolation Valves) can isolate larger inventories near the source thereby reducing the potential for long-duration releases downstream of the vessel. In 2024, the Chemical Safety Board (CSB) issued CSB Safety Study: No. 2024-01-H which reviewed numerous investigations by the CSB of incidents that escalated due to the lack of effective remote isolation equipment. Due to those cases, the CSB recommended that both companies and industry regulators develop processes to evaluate the need for ROEIVs in refinery, chemical, and storage facilities that can be remotely activated from a safe location or automatically activated during a release.
